Na albu Goin’ Back to New Orleans z roku 1992 se Mac Rebennack alias Dr. John nevracĂ jen domĹŻ. VracĂ se tam, kde vyrĹŻstal, k sobÄ›. Do mĂst, kde se hudba mĂsĂ se Ĺľivotem, kde rytmus kráčà pĹ™ed melodiĂ a kde i smutek má vlastnĂ groove. Je to jeho nejupĹ™ĂmnÄ›jšà vyznánĂ mÄ›stu, kterĂ© ho stvoĹ™ilo – a kterĂ© on po celĂ˝ Ĺľivot znovu skládal z tĂłnĹŻ, vĹŻnĂ a pĹ™ĂbÄ›hĹŻ.
Kořeny, které nikdy neodumřely
Dr. John měl za sebou dlouhou a pestrobarevnou muzikantskou dráhu. Hrál rock’n’roll, psychedelický voodoo-funk, jazzové standardy i bigbandové aranže – a přesto se pokaždé vracel do Louisiany. Tam, kde hudba nikdy nebyla jen hudbou.

Na pĹ™elomu sedmdesátĂ˝ch let to udÄ›lal poprvĂ© s deskou Dr. John’s Gumbo (1972, spotify link), poctou zlatĂ© éře rhythm and blues z New Orleans. O dvacet let pozdÄ›ji na Goin’ Back to New Orleans (1992) šel ještÄ› dál. AĹľ k samotnĂ©mu prameni, odkud všechno vyvÄ›rá. Od kreolskĂ˝ch tancĹŻ devatenáctĂ©ho stoletĂ pĹ™es prvnĂ jazz, gospel a pochodovĂ© kapely aĹľ po pĂsnÄ› o radosti, hĹ™Ăchu i ztrátách, kterĂ© se zpĂvajĂ s ĂşsmÄ›vem na tváři.
Zvuk města, které neusnulo ani po hurikánu
Album se poslouchá jako kronika mÄ›sta. Dr. John vzdává hold všem, kdo mu vystavÄ›li hudebnĂ základy: Professoru Longhairovi, Jelly Roll Mortonovi, Jamesi Bookerovi, Leadbellymu, Fatsu Dominovi, Allenu Toussaintovi, ale i staršĂm legendám, o nichĹľ dnes mluvĂ uĹľ jen zasvÄ›cenà – Louisi Moreau Gottschalkovi nebo Buddy Boldenovi.
Jeho hlas, ten nezamÄ›nitelnĂ˝ chraplavĂ˝ drawl z tĹ™etĂho obvodu New Orleans, oĹľivuje pĂsnÄ› jako „My Indian Red“, „Basin Street Blues“ nebo „Cabbage Head“. KaĹľdá z nich má jinĂ˝ taneÄŤnĂ rytmus, jinou barvu. Od rozjĂvenĂ©ho „Milneburg Joys“, pĹ™es klavĂrnĂ boogie „Fess Up“ aĹľ po dechovou smršť „I’ll Be Glad When You’re Dead, You Rascal You“.
PĂsnÄ› o ĹľivotÄ›, ne o iluzi
„VÄ›tšina pĂsnĂ z New Orleans nejsou žádnĂ© mÄ›sĂÄŤnĂ serenády,“ napsal Dr. John v bookletu. „Jsou to pĹ™ĂbÄ›hy o ĹľivotÄ› a smrti, o gamblingu, vraĹľdách, nevěře, zpackanĂ˝ch láskách. O skuteÄŤnĂ˝ch vÄ›cech.“ PrávÄ› to je klĂÄŤ ke Goin’ Back to New Orleans. AutentickĂ© vyprávÄ›nĂ o mÄ›stÄ›, kterĂ© nikdy neoddÄ›lovalo svÄ›tskĂ© od posvátnĂ©ho. Tam, kde smutek tanÄŤĂ bok po boku s extázĂ a kde i blues dokáže mĂt ĂşsmÄ›v v koutku.
Orchestr, co dýchá stejný vzduch
Dr. John se v nahrávacĂm studiu obklopil lidmi, kteřà New Orleans nosili v krvi. Kytarista Danny Barker, dechařštĂ veteráni Al Hirt a Pete Fountain, bratĹ™i NevilleovĂ©, saxofonistĂ© Alvin „Red“ Tyler a Fred Kemp. Tihle bájeÄŤnĂ muzikanti dohromady tvořà kapelu, která znĂ jako samotnĂ© mÄ›sto.
Žádná studiová sterilita, ale trubky z Jericha, pot a ÄŤasto aĹľ nesnesitelnĂ© klubovĂ© horko na place, kde je noc stále mladá. Je v tom jistá nÄ›ha. Návrat domĹŻ, kterĂ˝ se promÄ›nĂ v kolektivnĂ oslavu, kde si kaĹľdĂ˝ hudebnĂk vezme kousek minulosti a promÄ›nĂ ji v souÄŤasnost. Tak, jak to muzikanti z NOLA umĂ odjakĹľiva.
Návrat, který nic neuzavřel
Za tuhle desku zĂskal Dr. John Grammy, ale to je jen poznámka pod ÄŤarou. Goin’ Back to New Orleans je vĂc neĹľ triumf – je to návrat ÄŤlovÄ›ka, kterĂ˝ nikdy skuteÄŤnÄ› neodešel. Deska, na nĂĹľ se historie mÄ›nĂ v pĹ™Ătomnost a hudba v paměť. KdyĹľ ji posloucháte, cĂtĂte, Ĺľe New Orleans nenĂ jen mÄ›sto. Je to stav mysli, rytmus v tÄ›le, ozvÄ›na něčeho, co se nikdy neztratĂ. A Ĺľe nÄ›kdy se nevracĂme domĹŻ proto, abychom tam nÄ›co našli, ale proto, Ĺľe to mĂsto uĹľ dávno Ĺľije v nás.
